Catalent Pharma Solutions is hiring for an experienced Chemist II perform Preformulation activities for our San Diego, CA team. The Preformulation Chemist II will be expected to perform all the duties of a Chemist I but with a greater degree of autonomy. In addition, the Chemist II must be able to independently plan and execute simple laboratory experiments and will be expected to clearly communicate the status of projects to cross-functional team members, management, and Clients. The Chemist II will be developing the use of innovation and creativity in exploring alternative approaches to problem solving. The individual must have demonstrated proficiency in preformulation techniques for API and intermediates, particularly HPLC, UPLC, Pion uDiss/Pulse, and physical characterization techniques such as TGA, DSC, PXRD, GVS, PSD, microscopy, and SEM. The individual may be required to assist in the creation and/or revision of company SOPs. The Chemist II will be increasingly sought for training and mentoring of other colleagues. All duties will be performed in compliance with company standard operating procedures (SOPs) and GMP regulations, as appropriate.







The Role (daily responsibilities)





+ Conduct preformulation studies to support drug development efforts for our clients (physical characterization, phototoxicity, log P/D, dissolution, solubility, stability, bulk/tap density etc.)



+ Internalize analytical methods



+ Execution of excipient compatibility studies.



+ Exercise technical discretion and critical thinking in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments



+ Individuals will propose solutions to supervisor for most scientific problems.



+ Clear and accurate record keeping in laboratory notebooks and some secondary review of other colleague’s work for scientific accuracy and compliance



+ Increase in client interaction will be a focus. Individuals may lead discussions with clients on technical topics relating to their project.



+ Prepare reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses



+ Maintain a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature



+ Develop understanding of cGMPs and Catalent SOPs and systems applicable to work performed



+ Comply with good housekeeping and safety practices









Education and/or Experience





+ 4 year degree, from an accredited university, in a physical, chemical, biological, or pharmaceutical science required



+ BS degree with 2-4 years of experience in preformulation or related techniques OR MS degree with 0 to 2 years of experience in preformulation or related techniques is required to qualify.



+ Experience in solid state characterization tools (DSC, TGA, GVS, SEM, PXRD, PSD, microscopy) for crystalline and amorphous materials
