_*Position Summary*_

The RN Unit Educator is a registered professional nurse who demonstrates expertise in a specific area of clinical nursing and is responsible for developing, implementing, & evaluating a program of education for an assigned population. Programming includes initial and ongoing staff competency (including a standardized department-based orientation), as well as continued education as identified by needs assessments and regulatory requirement initiatives. Applies policies, procedures, standards, and regulations as appropriate to their populations. The scope of the education will be determined through collaborative practice with department management, educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care; assumes the role of an educator, facilitator, consultant, researcher and change agent.

_*Minimum Education Requirements*_

* Bachelor's in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited School of Nursing

* Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN), Education, or other related graduate field of study preferred

_*Minimum Experience Requirements*_

* Four years of recent nursing experience

* Four years of experience in a clinical speciality preferred

* Two years of staff development, academic teaching and /or project development coordination preferred Requires advanced knowledge in nursing, evidence-based practice methods, and person-centered care concepts

* Nursing skills and knowledge base specific to specialty unit

* Knowledgeable in the use of Microsoft Office products and e-learning platform

* Operating Room experience, required


* Current Colorado RN license/ Current RN license from a participating state in National Licensure Compact

* Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association required

* Additional certifications may be required (refer to facility addendum(s)

* Professional certification preferred

* Demonstrates progress in obtaining staff development certification within one year of meeting eligibility requirements

* Acts as a change agent in support of house wide education initiatives, as applicable to department.

* Acts as a member of the education support team for management of quality and regulatory initiatives and projects.

* Advances healthcare practice by developing and integrating policies, procedures and standards by being familiar with company-wide policies and procedures.

* Is knowledgeable in current healthcare trends and related legislative issues.

* Incorporates evidence-based practice and adult learning theory in project and course content.

* Identifies educational needs and opportunities using data from the organization such as regulatory requirements survey information and employee and customer evaluation data.

* Collaborates with staff and management in differentiating between educational versus

* performance/compliance issues in order to design an effective plan of action.

* Seeks out continuous learning opportunities and continuing education in areas of staff development and clinical expertise.

* Demonstrates competence in the use of technology.

* Plans and facilitates education initiatives/classes/events that benefit the staff in collaboration with nursing leadership and key stakeholders, to include but not limited to the annual competency validation, department orientation, residency training program, specialty practice training classes, preceptor class, and outside committee participation.

* Evaluates the quality of programs and services offered, including class evaluations and incorporation of feedback into program improvement.

* Responsible to track course statistics and maintain documentation of educational activities including, but not limited to the evaluation data, attendance numbers and types, completion or success scores, etc.

* Identifies and evaluates appropriate products, programs, and services based upon needs assessment for populations served for planning and improving of educational offerings at the department level.

* Presents selected topics or inservices in clinical specialty.

* Participates in the organizational clinical competency committee meetings.

* Demonstrates advanced clinical skills, judgment, and nursing process in the management of specific patient populations (area of clinical specialty) delivering high quality patient care. Maintains clinical competencies in areas of accountability.

* Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to address deficiencies identified in the documentation audits.

* Assists unit manager(s) with staff selection of preceptors.

* Plans, evaluates, and implements program changes to maximize organizational resources and demonstrate best return on investment for the organization.

* Manages own payroll hours and time effectively to meet the expected departmental outcomes.

* Responsible to work collaboratively with department leadership, educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care.

* Maintains visibility on clinical units to evaluate educational and/or project outcomes.

* Utilizes principles of communication and change theory in providing health care consultation to other departments and staff; specifically in areas of training/education/program development and associate development.

* Functions as a role model for excellence in care by assisting nursing personnel with decision making in clinical situations.

* Assesses learning needs, designs, organizes, implements, and evaluates education programs (orientation, continuing education, and in-services) that facilitate professional growth, knowledge and skill development, competency, applicable standards and attainment of standards of care for direct care providers within the department.

* Maintains accountability for integrating the multidisciplinary process in assessment, problem identification, planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating partnership with clinical managers, nursing leadership, unit educators, and nursing associates.

* Works with leaders to plan and deploy essential and just-in-time training.

* Plans, oversees, and participates in competency validation of nursing and other clinical associates.

* Coordinates and/or participates in committees as appropriate to strategy initiatives.

* Conducts designed education offerings in a professional and organized manner.

* Serves as a member of the education team for management of quality and regulatory standards.

* Provides input to management regarding identification of individual staff skills as it relates to staff performance.

* Enhances professional development and quality of care through observation, verbal critique and coaching, and written appraisal of staff.

* Facilitates the integration of quality improvement activities into nursing practice.

* Identifies barriers to learning and facilitates solutions to remove those barriers.

* Collaborates and functions effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams; fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve quality and cost efficient patient care.

* Ensures active advertising/marketing of educational inservices and programs throughout the organization to facilitate maximum session participation.

* Provides consultative services within area(s) of specialty to other departments as it relates to organizational education needs.

* Implements a professional self-development plan to ensure competencies in quality care, adult learning theory and professional development.

* Attends department meetings, as appropriate.

* Attend educational opportunities to promote professional development.

* Participates in professional organization(s).

* Collaborates with community, state, and national resources and applicable governing boards in developing and implementing best practice in educational standards.

* Assists with assessing, planning, coordinating, and evaluating processes related to nursing student clinical rotations as applicable.

* Collaborates with the Centura System educators to provide equitable continuing education opportunities to staff and the community.

* Attends department meetings, as appropriate.
